Abolicionismo, um processo em questão

Abstract

The abolition was characterized by a process composed of various phases and it was conditioned by diverse factors and interests. As of 1866, there was a growth in the desire for an end to slavery, while 1871 marked the beginning of an abolitionist campaign. The adherence of important personalities to this cause and the weakening in its opposition on the pert of politicians, landowners, and institutions were significant to the subsequent developments. The Brazilian social structure, that was based on slavery, started presenting tensions after 1850, culminating in the abolition, which occurred to satisfy the interests of the power holders. The abolitionist campaign was part  of a complex of historic facts that remolded the Brazilian society, adapting it to conditions that arose from international circumstances.
