Abstract

The Portuguese legal system in Colonial Brazil in regard to the work and status of the Indians faced strong opposition from the Colonists and Jesuits, for restricted their manipulation of these populations and the use of Indians as slaves. Yet since the legislation was factious and imprecise, it did not permit the Indians to achieve self-government nor did it allow for their necessary integration into the Brazilian society.
