Mário de Andrade: percurso crítico de Anita a Vieira da Silva

Abstract

Gaining consciousness of the problem of space is -- and always has been -- a fundamental issue of 20th century painting. Our question is how the issue of space, which has so clearly stated in Europe, could have also become important in Brazil, a context not included toward theoretical reflection on the part of painter-pedagogues that belongued to modernity. Preliminary studies on Vieira da Silva's stay in Brazil (1940/47) showed us a way of answering this question. By comparing what she produced before her arrival to that done during her stay, it is possible to apprehend how her art influenced Brazilian painting, on the one hand, and, on the other, how Brazilian art influenced her work.
