Abstract

This study tries to examine violence in João Guimarães Rosa´s novel Grande Sertão Veredas. In this book, the violence is evaluated by the narrator, Riobaldo, sometimes as an external phenomenon, considered strange and coondemned, and sometimes as a subjective interest, in that case associated to pleasure. From this duality results an abiguous conception of justice. This subject is examined considering its relations with the following topics - the devil, the life in groups of "jagunços" and the forbidden passion - and also with aspects of the narrative structure.
