Abstract

This essay has the purpose to discuss some questions that arise in the Brazilian historiography about our colonial past which refer more specifically to studies about black slavery and to problems that derive from it for the analysis of the Brazilian colonial society itself. Three specific periods will be focused -- the period before 1930; the 30s and 40s and the late 50s, and part of the 60s -- and, from these periods on themes and tendencies of the historical research of the 70s and the 80s about this basic questions will be pointed out.
