Abstract

This text attempts to give a profile of the Brazilian Indian from 1698 to 1958 as he appears in certain works of German literature. The Brazilian Indian is presented as the last vestige of Adam on Earth, as a mythological being in whom European values and ideals are reflected, and not as anindividual with his own costumes and culture. This shows how difficult it is for Europeans to understand and accept what comes from outside.
