Abstract

Nationalism acted as a motor for economic life while protectionism and state action were the instruments that led to the development of those regions that are the richest in the world today. Only after reaching this point did these nations become favorable - more in their discourse than in their practices - to economic liberalism. In countries like Brazil, state intervencionism in which control is shared with labour unions would need to reach the large enterprises directly, leaving medium and small companies freedom of operation, in order to allow for greater flexibility in the economy.
