Abstract

The article deals with the references of the field of urban history on the book De comunidade à metrópole: biografia de São Paulo (1954), better known as Formação histórica de São Paulo: de comunidade à metrópole (1970). Richard Morse’s work is a look at urban history and culture in São Paulo, establishing relations with urban biographies published in the United States and with the reflections of Lewis Mumford systematized in The Culture of the Cities (1938). This paper seeks to understand this work at the intersection of looks and perspectives between São Paulo and New York, as a essential cultural history of the metropolis of São Paulo.
