Abstract

Seeking to understand the construction of the degradation that many brazilian urban rivers reached the 21st century, references that could clarify the urban fluvial context at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th were sought. Among the selected works, the Saturnino de Brito’s got importance due to the diversity of situations addressed and its innovative charater. The analysis of four cities where he worked showed that there was enough scientific knowledge to have minimized the damage to the water bodies and that his work contributed to safeguard part of this natural heritage for the cities’s future.
