Abstract

The article discusses the city project for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, strongly based on symbolic devices such as photography, image production, architecture and urbanism, essential elements of the spectacularization. The paper seeks to discuss the most striking features of this symbolic economy based on recent studies, in dialogue with their respective analysis tables. Urban transformations and instruments of representation are here transformed into an object of investigation. We are looking for a critical reading of the project by which the Rio 2016 coalition of power undertook its march - urbanistic and, at the same time, symbolic - towards the Games. The analysis comprises the period of 2009, when the host city was announced, and 2016, year of the Olympics.
