Abstract

The paper deals the creation of company towns in Brazil by factories and mining companies during the period between 1811 and 1880. It distinguishes the diversity of size and of program in these company towns, in which similarities are located, such as the usual presence of single-family houses and collective dwellings. The option for the localization of these spaces of work and housing in the countryside is also considered. In terms of their functional programs the plans of these settlements were innovative. However they do suggest very much the lay-out of sugar cane mills and farmhouses from the colonial period, without including formal architectural elements which could point to the emergence of a new industrial aesthetic order, at least up to 1880.
