Abstract

Through the concepts and interventionist practices held by the social workers during the 1940's and 1950's, regarding social housing, this paper debates the building-up of the so called "new man" by the Estado Novo regime. The aim is to understand how the assistentialist thought gained strenght in Brazil, as well as its relations wit the State and with the catholic thought. Through final course papers presented to Social Service schools and articles published in the Annals of the I Brazilian Congress of Social Service in 1949, the relationship between social housing and interventionist practices is discussed.
