Abstract

Comprehended between the publication of the 1902 City Council Code and the opening of the Pedro II Theater in 1930, the present study is subjected to the urban politcs that orientated the modernization of the city of Ribeirão Preto. Understand the hygiene and beauty discourses upon the consolidation of the city progress which were defined by its promoters as the inner country metropolis, and as these policies were spatially limited to the urban area that was expanding from the XV de Novembro Square to the limits of the rivers, Retiro and Ribeirão Preto, defining then an urban modernization restricted to the between-rivers: clean, beautiful and rich.
