Abstract

This article investigates how land appreciation as a result of urban projects was understood in the period from 1920 to 1940 in the City of Rio de Janeiro. We show how these interventions and their objectives were perceived by urban planners and the population and justified by the government through the analysis of images and technical reports from that period. From this perspective, we discuss relevant aspects of planned or executed urban projects such as the razing of the Morro do Castelo Hill (1920), the opening of Presidente Vargas Avenue (1940) and the Agache Plan (1930).
