Abstract

The process of verticalization in João Pessoa city, between 1956 and 1974, is dealt, through testimonies and criticisms toward tall buildings, which progressively were appearing in the urban landscape. To characterize the representations formed then about these new constructions, based on analyses of articles in local newspapers and opinions of municipal laws which sort the subject out, is intended. The active participation of the State in these discussions, which are based on symbolic and subjective aspects, as the adaptation of the environment, just like it was common for the documents of the press, is noticed.
