Abstract

This article presents a teaching and community outreach experience developed at the course of Architecture and Urbanism of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, being analyzed in the context of new urban planning instruments that have evolved since the 1980's. It deals specifically with the conception of a proposal for a Land Use and Occupation Plan for the Special Area of Social Interest (AEIS) of Vila de Ponta Negra, in Natal/RN, Brazil. Two of the city's Master Plan instruments stand out in the analysis, the Sectors Plan and especially the AEIS. The role the Academy can play on urban issues is also emphasized.
