Abstract

Starting from the debate on modernity, culture and economy in Germany early twentieth century, the text focuses on the Deutsche Werkbund, Muthesius and his supporters in their approaches to “type” and “typification”, industry and serialization, and the conflicts inherent in capitalist cultural system in which were inserted. Then, it questions counterpoints and approaches of this discussion with the formulations of Walter Gropius about the industrial manufacture of housing for the masses and the european experiences between the two world wars, offering reflections about the Brazilian housing enterprise, when it experienced in the 1960s, a public policy based in scale, rationalization and industrialization.
