Abstract

Between 1954 and 1959 two controversies develop, arising from the attempt of redefining a position on modern architecture: one from Max Bill´s criticism to Brazilian modern architecture and the other from Reyner Banham towards italian architecture. In both, Ernesto Nathan Rogers and the <<Casabella-Continuità>>, directed by him, had an important part. Clarifying Roger´s role in the first debate, the relationship between his ideas and works and Brazilian architecture, besides the network he established in the country, is one this article´s objectives, as well as discussing issues and problems raised by such episode, reconsidering its validity on current events.
