Abstract

Brazilian cities passed through profound changes in their urban structures in the late nineteenth century. It is intended here to explain about the participation of professionals in formulating proposals to the problems posed, taking as an example the work of two members of the Paula Souza family. At different times, the engineer Antonio Paula Souza and the medical doctor Geraldo Paula Souza worked for the sanitation of the São Paulo relating to public water supply. The intention of the article is to highlight the complexity of urban problems faced at the time by the lack of an adequate infrastructure network.
