Abstract

This paper deals with the federal actions to protect the cultural heritage in São Paulo especially considering the historiographical production of Luis Saia, to which is due the meaning and effectiveness of that set of practices. I intend to show how a narrative construction related with the notion of “paulista cultural evolution” allowed to guide a set of preservationists practices over a long period that begins with the frustrated paulistas intellectual projects under the leadership of Mário de Andrade and flowed to a moment in which the context of urban sprawl have claimed for new meanings toward the national cultural heritage.
