Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death in Brazil and worldwide. The lifestyle and its impact on cardiovascular health are widely explored and therefore considered an intervention tool for the prevention and management of CVD. Cardiac rehabilitation programs, in addition to physical activity, also involve activities aimed at improving lifestyle in general. Thus, the objective of the present research was to evaluate the effect of cardiac rehabilitation on the lifestyle of cardiac patients. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional, pre- and post-test intervention study, in which 70 (seventy) patients diagnosed with CVD from a cardiac rehabilitation program participated. Initially, an evaluation was conducted, on a previously scheduled day and time, for the application of two research instruments with the participants: one for the identification of sociodemographic profile and the Adult Lifestyle Questionnaire for Cardiovascular Diseases (ALQ-CVD). After six months from the first evaluation, the ALQ-CVD was reapplied. During this six-month period, cardiac patients continued to participate in the cardiac rehabilitation program, two or three times a week. It was observed, after six months of rehabilitation, a significant improvement in the participants' lifestyle (Before= 41± 9, After= 47±5, p<0.0001), but without a change in the classification (very good). There was a significant improvement in four out of the six lifestyle pillars evaluated, with no change only in alcohol and tobacco consumption and relationships. The cardiac rehabilitation program, composed of supervised physical exercises and health promotion actions, is an effective strategy in improving the lifestyle of cardiac patients.
