Introduction: Cardiorespiratory arrest is a sudden interruption of ventricular mechanical activity and breathing, representing a life-threatening event. Basic life support is a standardized set of procedures for initial care in this situation. However, healthcare professionals in the hospital setting often perform basic life support inadequately or ineffectively, which is attributed to infrequent training, among other factors. Objectives: To evaluate the short- to medium-term impact of a two-phase basic life support educational strategy for nursing professionals. Methods: This is a quality improvement study with a pre- and post-test design. Nursing professionals from a university hospital in Northeast Brazil were evaluated through a sociodemographic questionnaire and their performance in theoretical items and practical assessments. Results: The final sample consisted of 37 participants, with a mean age of 41.2 ± 6.43 years, of which 86.5% were women. There was improvement in the mean scores obtained on the practical post-tests (p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 2.008 [95% CI = 1.440 - 2.57]) and theoretical tests (p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 1.029 [95% CI = 0.624 - 1.42]) compared to the pre-tests, with the practical performance improvement being significantly greater than the theoretical (p < 0.001, rank biserial correlation = 0.935). The level of professional education, previous participation in an American Heart Association course, prior experience, and frequency of cardiopulmonary arrest attendance had distinct impacts on performance. Conclusions: The two-phase theoretical-practical training strategy effectively improved the participants' performance, which was still unsatisfactory given the great importance of mastering the subject. These results emphasize the need for frequent training to enhance the learning of basic life support among nursing professionals due to their crucial role in patient care.
