Psoas muscle abscess is a rare condition difficult to diagnose clinically, as have non-specific signs and symptoms. In this case report, we illustrate an example of psoas muscle abscess associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis in female patient, 48 years old, with diagnosis of AIDS five years ago. Physical examination showed the patient’s palpable mass in the lower back which was confirmed by ultrasonography and computed tomography. The smear obtained from the abscess puncture liquid showed the presence of resistant acid-fast bacilli. After combined treatment regimen started with antituberculosis drugs, the patient improved clinically. Although rare, the psoas muscle abscess is a disease that has been most frequently observed in immunocompromised patients, especially those with HIV-tuberculosis co-infection. In this case, the identification of the etiologic agent associated with the abscess was critical to ensure an adequate therapeutic conduct and consequently the good progression of the diseaseDownloads
