Abstract

Objective: To analyze the efficacy of a cognitive auditory perception in improving tinnitus perception and nuisance, and the influence of counseling and levels of anxiety and depression on therapeutic outcomes. Method: Quantitative, blinded, longitudinal study. Thirteen subjects with chronic tinnitus submitted to Auditory Cognitive Training (ACT) intervention were divided into two groups: Group 1 - seven subjects submitted to the training sessions without previous counseling, and Group 2 - six subjects who received speech therapy counseling associated with the intervention proposal. Tinnitus assessment was performed with Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Visual Analog Scale for Loudness (VAS L) and Unpleasantness (VAS I) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: The comparison showed significance in the comparison between pre- and post-intervention in the following variables: VAS L (p-value=0.002), VAS I (p-value= 0.003) and THI (p-value=0.001). The correlation between the VAS I, VAS L and THI findings with the HADS for anxiety and depression resulted in non statistically significant values. Also, no
significance was found in the comparison between the variables Post with G1 and G2, exposing that there was no influence of counseling on CT. Conclusion: The present study verified that the proposal for tinnitus treatment through cognitive auditory perception was effective in reducing the loudness and nuisance of tinnitus, without suffering the influence of speech therapy counseling and emotional aspects (anxiety and depression) on the therapeutic results.
