Edema is defined as liquid accumulation in the interstitial space. In this review, the mechanisms of localized and generalized edema formation were discussed as well as semiologic aspects used in approach to its differential diagnosis. The pathophysiologic mechanisms of the cardiac, cirrhotic and renal (nephritic and nephrotic syndromes) edemas were detailed highlighting the alterations of the mechanisms of control of the effective arterial volume.
