In this review, primary headaches are defined as chronic diseases of episodic or continuous clinical presentation and unknown etiology, but of dysfunctional, not structural nature. The four main categories of primary headache (migraine, cluster headache, stress headache or chronic daily headache) are discussed in their etiopathogenic, clinical and therapeutic aspects.
