Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the major health problems worldwide, presenting important complications, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic foot (DF). The combination of DR with DF would more severely affect these individuals, compromising numerous aspects of their lives and the health system. Objective: To verify the association between DR and DF in patients treated at a reference center. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study carried out with patients
diagnosed with DR in a reference center in the state of Ceará, from January 2020 to December 2020. The sample was divided into two groups, one formed by individuals with DR and the other without DR. Logistic regression models were constructed for multivariate analysis between the explanatory variables and the presence of DR and p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 520 medical records were analyzed. After multivariate analysis and adjustments for all significant variables in the bivariate analysis, the following variables remained associated with DR: age group, sedentary lifestyle, DF, total cholesterol (TC), hemoglobin (Hb) and creatinine (Cr) (p<0.05). Still regarding the biochemical profile between the groups, the values of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), TC, Hb and Cr were significantly different (p<0.05). DR was significantly related to DF (p<0.001). When comparing the glycemic, pressure and anthropometric profile according to the level of severity of the DR, only the HbA1c values showed significant differences (p=0.040). DF was correlated with the variables of the glycemic, pressure and anthropometric profile. Conclusion: DF had a high incidence in patients with DR, establishing a significant association between these complications.
