Abstract

In this work the authors consider some aspects of neonatal mortality in São Paulo since 1950 and its influence on infant mortality. If compared to other similar or less developed areas, neonatal mortality in São Paulo is very high. The authors comment on some data obtained from the first year of the "Interamerican Investigation of Mortality in Childhood" in which it was stated that perinatal causes and infections diseases are mainly responsible for the high neonatal mortality rate. Aspects related to those causes and some contributory factors are also studied.
