The pretend play as a tool on imaginary expression of children in chemotherapy treatment hospitalized

Abstract

Objective: To understand behaviors and experiences of children undergoing chemotherapy treatment,  through play pretending. Methods: Multiple case study, covering 5 children in a cancer pediatrics ward, for chemotherapy treatment, having as strategy the play of pretend. The tests were filmed, with subsequent transcription performed by two independent evaluators, ensuring greater reliability of the data, and separating the categories of analysis. Results: According to the defined categories, one can identify that
during play the children have good exploration and adequate choice of materials; distractors were present during the game; imitation was not a resource used by children in their actions; despite bringing domestic themes into their play, hospitalization appears as the main theme, demonstrating a great wealth of detail and knowledge about the clinical procedures experienced. Conclusion: Despite the limitations imposed by the chemotherapeutic process, the engagement of children’s in the pretend play it was useful and favored the expression of feelings about the process experienced.

    Possui graduação em Terapia Ocupacional pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (1986), mestrado em Educação Especial (Educação do Indivíduo Especial) pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (1994) e doutorado em Educação pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (1999). É professora doutora/ RDIDP da Universidade de São Paulo na Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, Departamento de Neurociências e Ciências do Comportamento - Divisão de Terapia Ocupacional. É orientadora dos programas de pós graduação em Neurologia da FMRP-USP e de Saúde Pública da Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto (USP). Co-orientadora de doutorado no programa de Ciências de Desporto da Universidade Trás-Os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal). Coordena o LEPTOI Laboratório de Ensino e Pesquisa em Terapia Ocupacional, Infância e Adolescência (Grupo de Pesquisa do CNPQ). Tem experiência na área de Terapia Ocupacional, com ênfase no desempenho ocupacional infantil, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: terapia ocupacional, paralisia cerebral e comportamento lúdico. Realizou, no ano de 2010, estágio Pós-Doutoral (bolsa de estudo da Capes) na Deakin University, Geelong - Austrália, desenvolvendo atividades acadêmicas e de pesquisa sobre o brincar de faz-de-conta de crianças pré escolares (avaliação e intervenção), em parceria com a Dra. Karen Ellen Stagnitti.
