Portrait of mobile device use proficiency among older adults: a comparative study

Digital literacy represents a challenge for older adults’ access and connectivity. In this context, occupational therapists intervene in educational processes to promote the empowerment of older adults for the safe, critical, and reliable use of technologies. This study analyzed whether occupational therapy interventions in digital literacy aimed at older adults impact their level of proficiency in using digital mobile devices and identified factors associated with learning. Forty older adults from the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba participated. The participants were followed for 10 to 12 weeks and completed the Brazilian version of the Mobile Device Proficiency Questionnaire to assess their knowledge in using digital mobile devices (smartphones). The results indicated a significant increase in digital proficiency in both cities, with greater improvement among participants from Curitiba. The study showed that factors such as education and income significantly facilitate the development of digital skills. In turn, other factors, such as support and a methodology centered on the needs of older adults, may also favor the learning process in the use of new technologies. Digital literacy is a fundamental path to promoting autonomy, inclusion, and a sense of self-efficacy among older adults in the current technological context.
