Autonomous workers’ theater: Community Funding for an Independent Theater

This study provides a panoramic analysis of popular and workers’ theater experiences from the late 19th century onward, encompassing European experiences in the context of urban growth and the rise of naturalism and the autonomous or self-active workers’ theater movement linked to the growth of the labor and revolutionary movements. It also examines significant popular and workers’ theater experiences in Brazil. This study aims to ponder the funding mechanisms of these groups, such as subscription schemes, state funding, and support from workers’ organizations, such as unions and political parties. It also discusses the relationship between these funding methods and the goals of theater groups, as well as their connections with the communities in which they are integrated, including the dynamics between amateurism and professionalism within these collectives.
