This article intends to analyze the first films of Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé — Den muso (1975), Baara (1978), Finye (1982) — through the way in which Mali’s post-colonial urban experience is presented by him. The text intends to oppose against the classification of a Third Cinema and its categorical implications notwithstanding recognizing the influence of mediations from the Occident based cinema and the post-colonial context in film form. It seeks to understand how Cissé’s cinema translates in form the urban collectivity of Mali without resorting to the nationalism suggested by theorists of a Third Cinema.
