Abstract

This text analyzes the production of doctoral theses associated with the Legal Medicine chair at São Paulo Medical School and demonstrates the connection of these texts with the process of technical and social formalization of legal medicine in São Paulo, between 1919 and 1938. In this context, it is argued that the inaugural theses contributed to the development of medical expertise applied to the defense of the legal order in São Paulo and culminated in establishing the parameters and purposes of the discipline through the local Medical School, summarized in the manual “Legal Medicine”, by Professor Flamínio Fávero in 1938.
