Information For Authors

Types of Documents Accepted

Saúde e Sociedade accepts articles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. For articles submitted in Portuguese, translation into English is optional. Articles submitted in English and Spanish, if approved, must necessarily be translated into Portuguese. All translations are carried out by the journal, but the costs are the responsibility of the authors.

All types of manuscripts must strictly comply with the presentation rules available in the “Manuscript Preparation” section, as well as the ethical standards and rules available in the “About the Journal” section.

The journal publishes preprints and unpublished articles of a reflective nature, research, and knowledge updating in the form of:

a) Original research articles: analytical texts resulting from original theoretical or empirical research relating to topics of interest to the journal (up to seven thousand words and 30 references);

b) Essays: texts based on theoretical, methodological, or thematic discussions that bring innovative aspects or problematize issues on the agenda in the periodical's field of interest (up to seven thousand words and 30 references);

c) Critical literature reviews: analytical texts resulting from syntheses of information available in the literature that feed updated discussions at the interface between social sciences and humanities and contribute to a critical and reflective approach with a theoretical basis on the subject under debate (up to seven thousand words. There is no limit to the number of references, as long as it does not exceed the established number of words);

d) Comments: short texts in reaction to the material already published by the journal, offering complementary information, contributions, or respectful and constructive criticism, in order to feed the academic and technical debate of the field's production - by indicating the modality of the matter in the Scholar system, please identify it as Letter to the Editor (up to one thousand words and five references);

e) Interviews: Testimonies from personalities or experts in the field who must be credited as authors of the article, which aim to update topics of interest to the journal (up to seven thousand words and 30 references).

For word count purposes, we did not include Summary and Abstract, even though they must be present in the body of the article.

If the submitted manuscript is a preprint, this information must be included in the Letter to the Editorial Board, with a description of the access link and DOI.

Saúde e Sociedade It publishes both spontaneous contributions that fall within its editorial policy and articles commissioned by specialists. Thus, the journal will be able to publish:

  •  Dossiers: set of essayistic or analytical texts resulting from original studies or research on a topic indicated by the editors and at their invitation;
  •  Supplements: special issues with a set of articles on a specific theme or issue, submitted to the journal for evaluation by their proponents;
  •  Editorials: thematic texts under the responsibility of the editors or guest researchers.
 

Authors' Contribution

 

Only those who have contributed substantially to the conception, planning, data analysis and writing of the article and who are responsible for the information present in its final version should be included as authors. All conditions must be met for the attribution of authorship.

Whenever an article has more than one author, it will be necessary to specify the contribution of each of them using the pattern Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT).

It is not permitted, under any circumstances, to change the authorship of an article after the start of the evaluation process.

 

Manuscript Preparation

 

Before submitting, check whether your manuscript meets the journal's editorial profile, all requests provided in our checklist, and the rules and ethical standards described on the website Saúde e Sociedade. 

The contribution must be original and unpublished and not be evaluated by another journal or scientific dissemination vehicle.

 

Article Submission Format

 

The documents to be submitted (title page and main document) must be configured as A4 size paper with 2.5 cm margins, 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman 12 font.

The maximum number of words, always including illustrations and bibliographic references, is seven thousand (7000), except for comments, whose limit is one thousand words (1000).

 

Structure

 

Title page

Title: Up to 50 words. Concise and informative. In the original language and in English.

Authorship: all authors must include their name, institutional affiliation (in descending order, for example: University, Faculty and Department), email, and ORCID. The author responsible for the correspondence must also provide their full address (street, city, zip code, state, country).

Individual contributions by authors: must follow the terms defined by the taxonomy CRediT, covering the criteria of conceptualization, data curation, data analysis, receipt of funding, research, methodology, project administration, software development, implementation and testing, supervision, validation of data and experiments, data presentation design, writing of the original manuscript, review, and editing. All authors must approve the final version of the manuscript and agree to be responsible for all aspects of the work.

Additional: information about financing, conflicts of interest, and acknowledgments must also appear on the title page, which must be submitted in a separate file as FILE NOT FOR REVIEW.

Manuscript (main document)

The main document must not contain information that could identify the authors and must present the title, abstracts, keywords, main text, and references.

Title: Up to 50 words. Concise and informative. In the original language and in English.

Abstracts: They must reflect the fundamental aspects of the work, with up to 200 words, including objectives, methodological procedures, and results. They must precede the text, be in the original language, and be in English (abstract).

Keywords: Up to 5 keywords, in the original language and in English, are presented after the abstract.

Main text: The organization of the text is at the discretion of the authors, but it is recommended to divide it into sections, which must consist of explanatory titles presented in bold.

Footnotes: They must be strictly explanatory in nature and used only when additional information is necessary to understand the argument presented in the article.

 

Digital Assets

 

Graphs and tables must be presented in their original programs (for example, in Excel: file.xls), duly identified.

Images (figures and photographs) must be provided in high resolution (minimum 300 dpi), in JPG or TIF, with a minimum width of 8 cm.

All illustrations must be submitted as separate files from the manuscript (main document). Images that can identify the authors must be submitted as FILE NOT FOR REVIEW.

 

Citations and References

 

Citations in the text must adopt the ABNT standard, following the author-date system, and cannot be replaced by numbering. The following format must be adopted: (Brito, 2022).

The authors are responsible for the accuracy of the citations and bibliographic references cited in the text. References must follow the standards of ABNT NBR 6023, be presented at the end of the work, and be ordered alphabetically by the first author's surname.

At the time of submission, in addition to the title page, manuscript (main document), and illustrations, authors must send, through the submission system, the Open Science Compliance Form and certificates or declarations of ethical approvals, when applicable.

 

Financing Statement

 

All sources of financial support for the work must be informed by the authors on the Title Page and in the submission system.
