Abstract

The increasing availability of more efficient diagnostic equipment and better tools for surgical treatment led to an increment in the frequency of indications of immediate interventional treatments after an episode of renal colic. Concomitantly, the population’s access to information about diseases and treatments improved in such a way that there has been an escalation in judicial complaints regarding endourological procedures in several countries. The literature review shows that, despite the technical progress and equipment available for endoscopic surgical treatment of urinary calculi, there remains an incidence of complications in endourological procedures for the removal of ureteral calculi. Lawsuits and consequential indemnity payments due to medical errors arising from endourological procedures are growing more frequent in the United States and Brazil recently.
