Non-suicidal self-injury is frequent among adolescents and is associated with subsequent attempted and completed suicides, suggesting that these behaviors and their related psychology may be on the same risk trajectory. Legal rules determine the doctor's obligation to notify suspected or confirmed cases of self-harm to health authorities. However, it is not just a matter of complying with the legal requirements; the doctor must be aware of this possibility, knowing how adolescents function and what might trigger harmful behavior to be able to adopt effective preventive measures. In general, adolescents report that self-harm relieves angst, guilt, or shame as a form of self-punishment. While non-suicidal self-injury often momentarily relieves anxiety, it frequently leads to long-term negative consequences. This narrative study aimed to point out the main topics related to this grave and highly prevalent problem.
