Abstract

This paper discusses the subjective interrelationships among work, health and professional identity. It focuses on the experience of the return to work after a period of retirement due to accident or illness. The development of chronic illnesses and the existence of sequels can often impede the worker’s return to his previous position, which increases the difficulties in his reinsertion in the professional environment. Thus, return to work tends to be associated with intense conflicts and anguish, with important repercussions on the professional’s identity and health . To illustrate the issue, four people in the described condition were invited to report their stories and how they felt about this special phase of their lives.
