Deaths by external causes represent an important factor in the loss of life and affects mainly economically active age ranges of the population. Among Brazilian young adults, 72% of the deaths are due to external causes. It is known that many of them are associated with a harmful consumption of alcoholic beverages. Aiming to estimate the dimension of the current influence of alcohol consumption on the onset of deaths by external causes, the present study is composed of a survey of data from 12.926 cases of death by external causes, examined between January and December of 2006 at the Institute of Legal Medicine of the State of São Paulo. The data obtained indicates a prevalence of 36.9% of victims with positive blood alcohol concentrations (BAC), with an ever higher prevalence among traffic accident victims (44%). Men had consistently higher prevalences and mean BACs, for all causes analyzed. The data described here indicate a worrying percentage of deaths by external causes associated with alcohol consumption in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
