The authors described the history of forensic medicine in Brazil, since its institution at the Bahia School of Medicine by Nina Rodriguez, to the contribution of Oscar Freire in bringing the scientific forensic work to Sao Paulo and to the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine, where the subject became, in time, an independent discipline, by the hands of Dr. Freire’s disciple, Flaminio Fávero.
