Abstract

Objective: this study aimed to identify prevalence and examine factors related to the risk of
alcohol consumption among pregnant women in a Brazilian municipality. Methodology: this is a quantitative cross-sectional study that assessed alcohol consumption among pregnant women. The sample comprised 161 pregnant women receiving follow-up care in Primary Care settings. The instruments included a questionnaire for sociodemographic data and the AUDIT test to identify problems related to alcohol use. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee and data collection took place individually in the Basic Health Units during antenatal consultations, administered by trained nurses or nursing technicians. Results: findings revealed a high risk of alcohol consumption in 39.1% of participants. Poisson multiple regression analysis confirmed increased risk among pregnant women who were adults (PR = 1.48), single, divorced or widowed (PR = 1.48), with an income exceeding three minimum wages (PR = 1.71) and were brown or black (PR = 1.54). Conclusion: the study revealed a high prevalence of alcohol consumption among pregnant women, with a higher risk among those aged over 24, single, with high income and brown or black skin color.
