The contribution of Community Singing in the assistance provided to patients at a Psychiatric Day Hospital

Objective: to verify the contribution of Community Singing in the assistance provided to patients at a Psychiatric Day Hospital. Methodology: a research study developed with twelve patients participating in Community Singing (a music choir) at the Day Hospital, who answered a questionnaire and a recorded interview. Field notes were taken. The data were analyzed in the light of Qualitative Analysis. Results: the number of positive feelings awakened during the meetings was approximately four and a half times higher than for the negative ones. All the patients asserted feeling pleasure when taking part in Community Singing. Half of them related music tunes to traumas and moments marked by difficulties and the other half only related them to pleasurable moments and used them to unload the pressure of negative emotions. As for personal and social interactions, the study showed that the participants exchanged experiences when sharing songs by means of the lyrics and through singing, strengthening interpersonal interactions both in and out of the Day Hospital. Conclusion: it was possible to verify that the patients presented improvements in relation to self-esteem and stability of their symptoms, as they asserted that singing helps them at difficult moments, assisting them during crises, modifying their mood, favoring socialization, bringing significant memories to the surface and contributing for them to be more aware of and engaged with their treatments.
