The article intends to present Carpeaux’s life and works, emphasizing his role as literary critic established in Brazil by retrieving two fundamental essays of his career, written at different moments: “Situação e presença: algumas reflexões sobre a crítica literária” (1941) and “Dialética da literatura brasileira” (1967). The study emphasizes the notion of presence, associated to the essayistic nature of his writing, the composition of a moveable critical locus between the European background and the analytic fruition of Brazilian literature, and the fluid coexistence of politics and literature in his writings.
