Resumen

The Brazilian novel of the 1930s belonged to a much more complex movement than the simple prevalence of the social novel, considered to be the face of the period. The beginning of the 1930s was marked by a necessity to overcome the mistrust seen as a gratuitous feature of Anatolian skepticism of the early century. In 1933, the “proletarian novel” phenomenon came to set an end to the possibility of mistrusting: an atmosphere of political and literary polarization was established, creating by this time a clear prevalence of the social novel. From 1937 on, however, there are clear signs of the exhaustion of the so-called social novel. This is the time of a new mistrust that cannot be mistaken with skepticism, being more a result of the impasse that brings a proclaimed war to decide the future — fascism or communism — of a West that sees itself overcoming liberalism
