Expertise in translation as a Complex Adaptive System

This article proposes understanding translation expertise as a complex adaptive system, drawing on approaches such as 4E cognition (embodied, embedded, enactive, extended) and the theory of complex systems, which examines the interaction between system components and their relationship with the environment (Bar-Yam, 2002). Based on the studies of Alves; Jakobsen (2021) and Alves; Da Silva (2021, 2022), expertise is viewed as a situated, distributed, and extended activity influenced by sensory, bodily, perceptual, contextual, and social factors. This perspective offers epistemological potential to understand expert performance in translation, highlighting the relevance of the multiple domains that comprise this task,
including in controlled laboratory contexts for empirical-experimental research.
