¿Qué tan excepcional es EE. UU.? Trabajo de cuidados y desigualdad

Resumen

Contrariamente a la afirmación común de que lo que distingue a EE. UU. de otros países ricos en términos de la dinámica del mercado laboral doméstico remunerado es su población inmigrante relativamente numerosa, este artículo argumenta que los factores críticos son, de hecho, el mínimo sistema de protección social vigente en EE. UU. y el extremo nivel de desigualdad económica en el país (incluida la desigualdad entre las mujeres), lo que incrementa tanto la oferta como la demanda de trabajadores domésticos remunerados. Además, el trabajo doméstico remunerado en EE. UU. está altamente estratificado, con amplias variaciones en salarios y condiciones laborales. En muchos aspectos, EE. UU. se asemeja más a los países del Sur Global que a sus contrapartes del mundo próspero.
