A resenha analisa criticamente o livro Slavery and the Dutch Art Invention (2025), de Caroline Fowler, que propõe uma releitura da arte holandesa do século XVII à luz do capitalismo racial e da escravidão atlântica. Para Fowler, a substituição da arte religiosa por gêneros seculares, como naturezas-mortas e cenas domésticas, reflete a transubstanciação dos corpos escravizados em mercadorias — uma operação simbólica e econômica que sustentaria a visualidade holandesa.
