Language and identity: yiddish and hebrew in the historical context of jewish education in Brazil

This work aims to investigate the linguistic policies adopted in the first Jewish schools with the arrival of the first Jewish immigrants to Brazil after the great migration wave from Eastern Europe to the west in the XIXth century.
In our historical retrospective on Jewish education in Brazil, aiming to investigate the two political-ideological currents, one based on the Hebrew language and the other based on the Yiddish language, we will use the Jewish press, which has been an important factor for the knowledge of the most recent history of the Jewish immigration of the XXth century, as our knowledge source.
In Brazil, between the years of 1914 and 1933 we witness the formation of community institutions with the end of the war and the increasing need of the immigrants to create Brazilian roots in the new country. Synagogues, libraries, institutions of support to the immigrant, along with a Jewish press and Jewish schools emerge in Rio de Janeiro, in São Paulo and Porto Alegre. In this last city, Joseph Halevi publishes in 1915, the first Jewish newspaper in Brazil, in Yiddish. It was called “Das Menscheit”, “The Humanity”.
In this article, we will mark the place of the Yiddish Language in the Ashkenazy universe as a language of cultural identity and the Hebrew as the national language, predominantly after the Jewish national renaissance and the creation of the State of Israel. Examining the tension that existed between the diverse linguistic currents among the Yiddish and the Hebrew proponents, representatives of the different Jewish nationalistic currents and their ideologies, we will delineate the role of the Hebrew language in the current social historical context.
