Abstract

The books of Samuel house two separate reports on the death of King Saul (1 Samuel 31:1-7, 2 Sam 1:1-16) and, over the centuries, researchers have proposed various solutions in order to understand this issue. Besides presenting and discussing some of them, this article indicates how the introduction and structure of 2 Sm 1 demonstrate relevant aspects in the story that describes the downfall of Saul and David's rise, contributing to delineate both the personality of the new king and the function of the elegy (2 Samuel 1:17-27) in the narrative.
