“How are the mighty fallen”: an introduction to the genre qinah

Based on the passages in 2 Samuel 1:17-27 and 3:32-34, this paper proposes an investigation of the genre qînāh ("elegy") within the Hebrew Bible, identifying the main features of it and comparing it to near genres. The goal is to understand the social function of this genre in biblical times in order to discover possible reasons for their reduced presence in the Hebrew Bible. Finally, will see how these passages make clear certain traits of character David, which are assigned texts, which will enrich the understanding of the reports contained in the book of
Samuel, who tell his accession to the throne and his reign
