Abstract

Rabbi Akiva, born in the first century of the Common Era, was a man of very humble origin who became a great scholar, teacher of most of the great sages of the next generation and whose sphere of influence extends from Jewish legislation to ethics and theology. He was captured, imprisoned and finally tortured to death by the Romans. This martyrdom inspires poetry and is a landmark in Jewish history, being present in the historical imaginary of the Jewish people for almost nineteen centuries.
